Bogotá

So many beautiful memories from this amazing place. The people in this Latin American country were so warm and inviting, you just feel at home. When I think of foreign countries I would live in, Colombia comes in close to the top. Here are my favorite photos.

I always enjoy flying. In true Coddiwomple fashion, I wanted to go to Colombia but there were no direct flights from ORD to IAH, so I had to fly to Memphis to make it there. No shame, I watched 500 Days of Summer on the flight from Houston to Bogota.

My absolute favorite thing to do while in Bogota was to go to Monserrate. It was drizzling the morning I went to the mountainside. I intended to take the trolley car to the top, but the line was already winding out into the street. I saw others starting up the path so I decided to be brave and take the path as well. Oh boy, did I underestimate how hard it was going to be to climb the trail. I don’t know if I was out of shape, or if it was being so far above sea level that got me, but I had to make periodic stops along the way up. Here’s a video of me dying.

The only reason I made it to the top was the perseverance of these two little boys climbing up with their mother. I was sitting down taking a rest break around what was probably the halfway point when they passed me. It was in that moment I decided not to feel sorry for myself and keep going. If you turn your sound up you can hear two things. One, is how labored my breaths are hahaha, and the second is that they were counting their steps. I started counting along with them, and I would say it definitely distracted me enough to ignore my physical pain.

I was wet, tired, hungry, and honestly mad at myself for taking the trail, but after a lot of perseverance, I finally caught a glimpse of the church, illuminated to a golden glow by a ray of sun breaking through the overcast sky. Something like that.
